Mid Coast-Parkview Health News

Brunswick, ME – During National Volunteer Week (April 10 – 17) Mid-Coast Parkview Health honored more than 500 volunteers working throughout the healthcare system. Celebrations occurred to recognize the volunteers at Mid Coast Hospital, CHANS Home Health Care, and Mid Coast Senior Health Center.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most common cancer in both men and women in the United States. We are making progress in fighting CRC; however, it remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in America when both sexes are combined. It is expected to cause about 50,000 deaths in 2016. Since early 2000's when the colonoscopy became the main tool in CRC screening, the death and incidence rates from the disease have dropped by almost 30% in both men and women. These are great strides that can be attributed not only to prevention and early detection through screening colonoscopy, but also with increasingly effective available treatments.

Pastor Jonathan Larssen has joined the Spiritual Care program at Mid Coast–Parkview Health. In his new role, Larssen joins a team of five professional chaplains, providing spiritual care for the patients, families, and staff of Mid Coast Hospital, Mid Coast Senior Health Center, and CHANS Home Health Care.

CHANS Home Health Care recently received a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The rating is based on data collected in a nationally standardized survey that asks patients about their recent experiences with CHANS. CHANS 5-star rating is published on Home Health Compare, an online comparison tool that allows consumers to make more informed decisions when choosing a home health provider.

The Mid Coast Center for Community Health & Wellness is offering a new program designed to help people better cope with stress and life’s challenges. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an eight-week intensive program that teaches mindfulness, an awareness that arises by intentionally paying attention to the present moment.

Earlier this week, MaineHealth announced a new partnership with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Boston. As an affiliate of MaineHealth, Mid Coast Hospital cancer patients will benefit from this new partnership, giving them streamlined access to tertiary care at Maine Medical Center in Portland and Dana-Farber for complex specialty care and clinical trials.

Mid Coast Hospital has been recognized as a “Best Regional Hospital” and as one of the two best hospitals in Maine by U.S. News & World Report for 2015-16. Mid Coast has been named the number two hospital in the state, and one of only two hospitals in Maine that met national high performing standards earning the distinction of “Best Regional Hospital” alongside Maine Medical Center in Portland.

For the past several months, it has been my pleasure to work with Ruth Macy. Her skills and knowledge served me well.

I am so grateful to every single person I encountered during my labor and delivery at Mid Coast.

Singing the Praises of Mid Coast Hospital
My deepest thanks to the staff of the ER and the Cardiac ICU and every other department that supports them. I was brought in by ambulance last Thursday and I hadn't been in a hospital as a patient since I was 7 years old...almost 60 years ago.

The Nurses Listened and Cared
I came in today for a diagnostic endoscopy. I want to thank the nurses. They helped me to calm down, they were expert IV starters, and actually listened and cared. Thank you!
