As serious runners prepare to tackle the 7th Annual Great Confluence
Race 10K/5K on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, an associated running activity which may be overlooked has been steadily gaining in popularity--the one mile Fun Run.
The one mile challenge on the grounds of Mid Coast Hospital has grown
each year with both youth and adults taking part. There is glory--the
first boy and girl finisher under eighteen-year-old are lauded with a
much coveted Division Winner bistro mug. There is profit ; the top 100 runners receive a ticket to the Regal movie theatres.
This year, however, there is a special recognition--a special Fitness
Champ patch that goes to each runner who finishes the race and who certifies that he or she has engaged in some physical activity twice a week for a month.
"It's an idea to encourage physical activity, encourage participation in
this great race, and to recognize those who make the commitment," says
Mike L'Abbe, one of the race organizers. "If you play soccer or ultimate, hike, bike, or run just twice each week, you are eligible for
the recognition," he says, "without regard to age."
Starts at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 17; Other Family Events Begin at 9 a.m.
The Fun Run begins at a very civilized 10 a.m. as the distance
competitors are finishing their race. The run is along a cross country
trail going down a wooded road starting from the hospital race central
tent. Other family events begin at 9 a.m.
There is no fee to challenge yourself on the Fun Run and no registration - just show up!
