Feeding patients appealing and nutritious foods to speed up their recovery process is our top priority.</p> <p>Frequently, we spend extra time talking to patients and patient's families about what foods would make their stay more comfortable. Special products are purchased and prepared to entice patients to eat. This involves daily conversations and special preparations from the diet aide, cook and nutrition assistant. So much of how we treat the patient involves the family. They are a large part in the recovery process. Here at Mid Coast, we not only care for the patient, we care for the family.</p> <p>We are a special, very caring group at the hospital. The staff here at Mid Coast Hospital would do anything for you and they go beyond the call of duty on a daily basis. I enjoy helping people and meeting all kinds of people. It is a particularly vulnerable time for people, a time where they often feel overwhelmed, fearful and alone. Providing emotional, spiritual, and practical support through daily visits allows me to connect to them, one human being to another, adding a touch of compassion and understanding during a highly stressful time.</p> <p>Mid Coast Hospital had a vision that Palliative and Supportive Care was a specialty that would enhance the comprehensive, compassionate care that we provide. The majority of hospitals do not have palliative care programs, but Mid Coast Hospital had the courage to be different and as a result has become a leader in this field in Maine. The efforts here are overwhelmingly 100%!</p> <p>I enjoy meeting people and hearing from them about the wonderful facility and that the staff are so friendly and helpful. A woman patient climbed on my trolley and was crying when she told me she had just come from oncology. I said, "I am a cancer survivor" and told her to hang on and keep the faith. She thanked me with a smile.</p> <p>Health problems will always be with us and we will always need a hospital, especially one that keeps up to date with the newest technology, equipment, and a flow of new MD talent. Mid Coast Hospital has state-of-the-art equipment in the MRI, excellent technologists and an outstanding group of Radiologists that are committed to providing the best possible service to the community. We live in the community in which we work.</p> <p>Our three technologists have a combined total of 35 years of experience, and we have performed thousands of exams in our careers without mishap. Our department is committed to patient safety.</p> <p>Several months ago a patient found a lump in her breast. The physician called and the patient came and had a mammogram within the hour. The Radiologist was concerned enough to proceed with an ultrasound, MRI and biopsy of the lump. This was all achieved in an afternoon. The patient was able to see an oncologist the next morning and had the results of her biopsy in less than 24 hours. This woman did not have to wait days or weeks for an appointment for all three of these modalities. This would never have been able to occur in a larger, less personalized institution. I am part of a dedicated group of professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that Mid Coast Hospital can provide quality patient care.</p> <p>I recently met a New York City hospital administrator at a local restaurant whose family member had been a recent patient at Mid Coast. She was so impressed with the care we provided that they decided to continue treatment here rather than transfer to a bigger, Boston-area hospital. Our staff in The Baby Place is a very friendly group; you will notice we work as a team to make each family's hospital stay more enjoyable and a pleasant experience.</p> <p>I am a Notary Public and have been lucky enough to perform weddings for patients before they deliver their baby. The nurses and I have made wedding bouquets for the brides out of pacifiers, tourniquets and baby hats!</p> <p>I want people in our communities to know that we are here for them when needed the most. At the start of my employment, which was before automated blood testing, blood tests were performed manually and on a given day if there were 20 patients, it was considered a busy day. In 2004, the Laboratory's new instrumentation makes it possible to process more than 100 blood tests and many other procedures with ease and the same if not better accuracy.</p> <p>The lab staff directly affects patient care through their interaction with patients, as well as their timely, accurate test results.
