As a palliative care social worker, I have an opportunity to provide support to patients and families who are facing advanced illnesses or life-threatening situations and need to be hospitalized. It is a particularly vulnerable time for people, a time where they often feel overwhelmed, fearful and alone. Providing emotional, spiritual, and practical support through daily visits allows me to connect to them, one human being to another, adding a touch of compassion and understanding during a highly stressful time.
Mid Coast Hospital had a vision that Palliative and Supportive Care was a specialty that would enhance the comprehensive, compassionate care that we provide. The majority of hospitals do not have palliative care programs, but Mid Coast Hospital had the courage to be different and as a result has become a leader in this field in Maine. Our commitment to this program reaches out to our patients and families and says "we care…we’re here for you…for a lifetime of caring."
