Center for Community Health & Wellness to Host Mini-Retreat

The Mid Coast Center for Community Health & Wellness will be adding to its mindfulness offerings with three-hour mini retreats offered three times throughout the year. The first, Mindful Morning, will be held on Saturday, December 8 from 9 a.m. until noon.

Mindful Morning is designed for individuals of all levels of experience, and will be held at the Mid Coast Center for Community Health & Wellness, 329 Maine Street. The cost to participate is $45.

Attendees will learn mindfulness-based exercises, meditation, and movement such as stretches and gentle yoga, as well as discuss the principles of mindfulness and its relevance to stress in everyday life.

Mindfulness is defined as an awareness that arises through intentionally directing one’s attention to the present moment, and has been studied for a range of medical and psychological conditions such as depression, anxiety, cancer, and heart disease.

Rebecca Porter, LPC-C, HHC will be one of the retreat’s instructors. Porter said hosting Mindful Morning is a way to give people who may know nothing about mindfulness an introduction to the practice.

"Our team really wanted to offer something for all experience levels to take a pause from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives in a low-commitment way," she said.

In addition to Mindful Morning, the Mid Coast Center for Community Health & Wellness also offers an eight-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MSBR) program, as well as Continuing Practice classes for those who have already taken MBSR.

Mid Coast Hospital staff and donors celebrated the opening of the Center for Community Health & Wellness in June 2018. The 9,000 square-foot facility’s opening was part of the $6.2 million renovation of the hospital’s Parkview Campus, located at 329 Maine Street.

Along with mindfulness courses, the center also offers programs on medical exercise, weight loss, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, and tobacco cessation to help patrons prevent and manage chronic disease.

Porter said, "Hosting the first mini-retreat at this time of year makes sense. Between holidays is a good time for folks to take a pause."

Those interested in signing up for Mindful Morning can register online at www.midcoasthealth.com/wellness/classes/, or call (207)-373-6585. Pre-registration is required.
