Mid Coast Hospital Installs 3D Mammogram Technology

Mid Coast Hospital Women's Imaging Center, a branch of Diagnostic Imaging, recently introduced a 3D mammography technology that will both increase the capacity for early cancer detection and expand the office's services.

Last month, the Women's Imaging Center installed a new Digital Breast Tomography (DBT) machine. Digital Breast Tomography, also known as 3D Mammography, is a type of mammogram that allows for a multi-layered and more detailed image than what is produced by a conventional 2D mammogram alone.

Though it provides a similar X-ray exposure as a 2D mammogram, the benefits of using DBT include improved cancer detection rates and a decrease in call-backs for additional imaging.

In addition to providing 3D mammograms, The Women's Imaging Center will use the new technology to perform stereotactic biopsies. A stereotactic biopsy is a procedure that uses a mammography machine to locate and remove abnormal breast tissue. It is a quick and efficient method and causes minimal disruption to the patient.

"Not only is Digital Breast Tomography the newest mammography technology available, but it is also more effective at detecting cancer from an earlier, more treatable stage than a conventional mammogram," said Dr. Patricia Greatorex of Mid Coast Medical Group–Breast and Surgical Oncology. "We welcome the opportunity to provide our patients with a wider range of services and the reassurance that they are receiving the best care possible."

Located at 81 Medical Center Drive on the Mid Coast Hospital campus, the Women's Imaging Center is conveniently open from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

The Diagnostic Imaging program at Mid Coast Hospital is accredited by the American College of Radiology, as well as fully integrated with Mid Coast Hospital and Mid Coast Medical Group, providing rapid results and ease of communication with providers.

To schedule an appointment please contact the Women’s Imaging Center at (207) 373-6630. To learn more, visit www.midcoasthealth.com/diagnostics/services.
