Mid Coast Hospital Receives an “A” Patient Safety Grade

One of 63 hospitals nationwide receiving straight A’s since the grades began
The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. healthcare system, has released new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, which assign A, B, C, D and F letter grades to hospitals nationwide. Mid Coast Hospital was one of 823 hospitals to receive an "A” for its commitment to reducing errors, infections, and accidents that can harm patients.

Mid Coast Hospital is recognized as one of only 63 hospitals in the nation to have achieved straight A’s since the safety grades began in 2012.

"This recognition is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to patient safety at Mid Coast Hospital,” said Lois Skillings, President and CEO of Mid Coast–Parkview Health. "We recognize that this is a reflection on the physicians, nurses, and the entire healthcare team who continuously look for ways to improve the care that we deliver. It is due to their hard work and dedication that we are able to achieve these consistent high ratings.”

"Hospitals that earn top marks nationally in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, have achieved the highest safety standards in the country,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "That takes commitment from every member of the hospital staff, who all deserve thanks and congratulations when their hospitals achieve an ‘A’ Safety Grade.”

Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. Grades are calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. More information about the Safety Grades is available at www.hospitalsafetygrade.org.

"We are so fortunate to be honored in the good company of ten other Maine hospitals who also received an ‘A’ this spring and alongside four Maine hospitals receiving perfect marks since it started,” said Skillings. "We are proud to join our peers in making Maine the nation’s leader in patient safety.”
