Commitment to Nursing Excellence Confirmed at Mid Coast Hospital

American Nurses Credentialing Center Again Awards Elite Magnet® Status

upon receiving news of the redesignation.

Mid Coast Hospital has once again achieved Magnet® designation, an honor bestowed upon less than seven percent of hospitals nationwide by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association.

The recognition attests to the hospital’s ongoing commitment of delivering high quality, excellent nursing care to its patients. Magnet designation is the highest and most prestigious international distinction a healthcare organization or hospital can receive for nursing excellence and outstanding patient care.

Mid Coast was first named a Magnet hospital in 2009, when it became Maine’s first community hospital to achieve the prestigious designation. Three years later it began the process of reapplying, a rigorous task that involved gathering evidence of achieving the high standards required. After submitting documentation, an expert team of appraisers from around the country visited Mid Coast Hospital to conduct a thorough onsite evaluation and speak directly with staff, patients, and families, and other community members, ultimately leading to the redesignation decision.

Deb MacLeod, MS, RN, Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care Services at Mid Coast Hospital, led the redesignation process. "Achieving Magnet recognition for the second time illustrates our commitment to deliver the very best care to our patients, their families, and our community each and every day,” She said. "This honor validates just how committed our team is and we could not have achieved this designation without the effort of each and every person in our organization. The values, professionalism, and passion for the work we do is apparent throughout the organization.”

Mid Coast Hospital staff celebrates news from the Magnet Commission that the hospital has once again achieved the elite status.

ANCC developed the Magnet Recognition Program® to recognize hospitals and healthcare organizations that provide nursing excellence. Research indicates that in general Magnet hospitals demonstrate better patient outcomes and higher patient satisfaction than hospitals that have not achieved this designation. The evidence Mid Coast submitted to the Magnet Commission clearly supports the research.

"This recognition is well deserved by the nurses and staff of Mid Coast. We are tremendously pleased and proud to have so many great people on staff that remain dedicated to providing the best care possible,” said Paul Parker, RN, BC, Director of Nursing Education and Practice at Mid Coast Hospital.

Mid Coast remains the only community hospital in Maine to achieve this status, joining Maine Medical Center, a tertiary-care facility, as the only other hospital in the state to carry this distinction. "Given our strong clinical affiliation with Maine Medical Center, we are honored to be in their good company,” said MacLeod.

The Magnet Program is just one indicator that Mid Coast Health Services relies on to continuously measure and improve quality in the care it provides. In late 2013, Mid Coast also received reaccreditation by The Joint Commission for demonstrating compliance with national standards of health care quality and safety in hospitals. It is the only local hospital to carry this Gold Seal of Approval and one of only five Joint Commission certified Primary Stroke Centers in the state.

MacLeod commented, "Magnet status is very rare. Having this designation, along with our Gold Seal of approval from the Joint Commission, sets us apart as a leader in healthcare and speaks to our commitment of delivering the absolute best care to the Midcoast community.”
