Centering Families Gather in Celebration
More than 150 families have participated in Mid Coast Hospital’s CenteringPregnancy® program to date. On Sunday, May 19, almost 200 parents and children gathered to celebrate the success of the popular Maternity Care program and enjoy the companionship of others who have also taken part.
CenteringPregnancy is an evidenced-based model of group prenatal care that integrates basic prenatal health assessment and education with social support. The Centering program allows women with similar “due months” to meet in a group setting, participate in their own care, and create supportive relationships that last far beyond the birth of their child.
Helki Crowder of Lisbon Falls joined a Centering group at Mid Coast when she was pregnant with her daughter. Now more than a year later, she still remains very close with the families in her group. “The friends that my husband and I gained in the CenteringProgram were a big part of our support system, not only during my pregnancy but after as well. I love having a group of moms with children the same age that I know I can count on and I hope the babies are friends for life,” said Crowder.
Established in 2010, the Mid Coast Centering program has resulted in better health outcomes and long-term support for those that have participated. Having recently been awarded a grant from the March of Dimes, the program will use those funds to seek certification through the Centering Healthcare Institute in Boston, MA.
Mid Coast Maternity Care provides three full-time midwives that facilitate the group care. “As providers we value the Centering program as it allows us to create closer relationships with our patients,” said Suzy Zimmerman, CNM. “The open exchange of information lets us get to know them better, so we can more effectively guide them through labor and support them after birth.”
Amber Gross gave birth to the first Centering baby at Mid Coast Hospital. “As a first-time mom, it was the best experience,” she said. “I learned so much from the other mothers. I got all of the benefits of one-on-one appointments, plus so much more.”
