Information & Resources

Inpatient visitors/escorts are permitted on the Mid Coast Hospital campus between 8 am - 8 pm daily as follows:

  • Inpatient/Critical Care: Each nursing unit at MCH is responsible for determining visiting hours in collaboration with the patient taking into consideration the patient’s biophysical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs.

    Pediatric visitors under age 2 are discouraged. Under special circumstances exceptions may be managed by the care team. Two visitors are allowed to visit patients in semi-private rooms. Please be sensitive to the rest needs of the other patients. Under special circumstances, exceptions may be managed by the care team.
  • Pediatrics: Two parents/guardians allowed in all areas as space allows to provide for patient care needs.
  • Obstetrics: One spouse/coach can be present at all times for labor and delivery admission.  Visitors are allowed during scheduled visiting hours, but they must visit one at a time. Visitors are welcome in the patient’s room if they are in good health and are allowed to hold babies after performing hand hygiene and with the mother’s permission.
  • Emergency Department: The Emergency Department is open 24 hours, 7 days per week to patients and visitors per Department Guidelines. Two family members/caregivers are permitted to accompany patients as space allows. Pediatric patients may be accompanied by two parents/guardians. COVID-19 positive patients may have two visitors as space allows and they must wear a mask and leave facility directly following the visit. Exceptions may be made for care plan discussions as arranged with the care team or for end of life or as needed for care plan discussions.
  • Patients on Palliative Care/Comfort Measures: There may be two visitors at a time for up to two hours/day, with times managed by the care team. Family members may present to the hospital for planned meetings with the medical team to discuss goals of care as needed. Policy exceptions may be managed by the care team.
  • Behavioral Health: Visitation in the behavioral health unit is by appointment with a provider’s order only, off-unit unless otherwise specified by the provider. The order will specify length of visit and whether staff will be present. Staff will review rules of visitation with the patient and visitor prior to the visit. Visitation time slots are 11 am, 2 pm, 4 pm, and 6:30 pm - one visit slot per patient per day. Visitation at 6:30 pm must be inside of the hospital from September 30 through May 1. 
  • End of Life in Any Inpatient Area: Up to four family members may visit patients likely to expire within 24 hours (all areas), with visit times to be managed by the care team.
  • Patients in Isolation for COVID-19 Infection or Being Evaluated for COVID-19 Infection: Patients on precautions for COVID-19 may have visitors. Visitors will be offered a mask and are required to remain masked at all times while in the facility including the patient’s room. Visitation should be limited to close family members and/or essential support people as identified by the patient. Visitors are asked to leave the facility immediately after leaving the patient’s room.

Outpatient areas:

  • Outpatient Surgery and Procedural Areas (Surgical Services, Surgical Suites & Digestive Health Center): Visitors are limited to two visitors and are welcome to stay with patients for their entire pre- and post-operative/procedure length of stay with the patient’s permission. Adult patients should arrange for drop-off unless they require special assistance. A family member/caregiver may be invited into the care area near time of discharge to discuss care and assist in discharge. Exceptions can be made in advance for patients who do not live locally. Pediatric patients may be accompanied by two parents/guardians.
  • Ambulatory/Diagnostic Areas: Adult patients may have one family member/caregiver join them at ambulatory visits. Pediatric patients may be accompanied by two parents/guardians.
  • Prenatal Ultrasounds: Patients having a scheduled prenatal ultrasound may have one family member present for the ultrasound.

Patient Discharges: Family/caregivers may come in to care area near time of discharge to discuss care and assist in discharge.

Patients Requiring Special Assistance: Patients in any care setting who need help, such as with mobility or communications with the care team about their medical history or care, may be assisted by an adult escort to provide the needed assistance or support if absolutely necessary.

Visitor/Escort Requirements

  • All visitors/escorts are subject to screening for COVID-19. Visitors/escorts with any respiratory symptoms will be encouraged to wear a mask while in the facility.  Masks are available at entry points to the facility.
  • We urge you to be current on your COVID-19 and annual flu vaccinations before visiting patients or others in the hospital.
  • Visits by children five years old and younger are discouraged in patient rooms between October 1 and April 30.

Before coming to the hospital, visitors can get the most up-to-date visitor information by calling 207-373-6000 and asking to speak with the nursing unit in charge of their loved one’s care. 

In keeping with our mission to provide a healthy and safe environment, all of our campuses are tobacco-free. The tobacco-free policy applies to all patients, visitors, medical staff members, vendors and employees. This means there is no smoking or tobacco use (including electronic cigarettes) allowed in any building, parking area, grounds or parked vehicles.

We are aware that it may be difficult for some individuals to adjust to this tobacco-free policy. However, as a health care organization, our mission is to protect the health of those in our community while promoting a culture of healthy living.

At MaineHealth, the privacy of your health information is a top priority. All MaineHealth locations follow strict guidelines that secure your medical records in accordance with your rights, and with federal and state regulations. You, or your legal representative, have the right to inspect and obtain a copy of your medical records. We do not offer walk-in services but can provide records electronically, on paper, on a USB flash drive, or on a compact disc (CD). Upon request, we will also send a copy of your medical records to another health care provider.

  • Be informed about your care. Ask questions and speak up.
  • Bring a list of medications to every appointment or hospital visit. If you need assistance making a list, call us at 207-373-6000.
  • Ask us to wash our hands, wash your hands, and have visitors wash their hands. Wash frequently and often--always after using the toilet, eating or any contact with a patient.
  • Ask your visitors to stay home if they are sick.They can stay in touch via phone or email.
