Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic Therapy is designed for the patient who has physical therapy needs that cannot be met by ordinary land-based physical therapy. Its purpose is to provide a warm water environment that provides both buoyant support and mild resistance to movement. This allows the individual to gain strength through exercise with less stress-produced pain than might occur with traditional physical therapy methods.

Our program is:

  • Located at the Bath YMCA
  • Handicapped accessible
  • Staffed by Mid Coast Hospital physical therapy staff who have advanced training in aquatics
  • Staffed by YMCA lifeguards
  • Held Mondays and Wednesdays in early to mid-afternoon

Who Can Benefit from MCH aquatic program?

Patients who are recovering from:

  • Arthritis
  • Balance deficits
  • Breast surgery
  • Chronic pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Head injury
  • Low back pain
  • Should, knee, hip or ankle pain
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Stroke-induced disabilities
  • Total knee or hip replacement

Aquatic Therapy can:

  • Reduce swelling
  • Increase blood flow to muscles
  • Promote relaxation
  • Improve flexibility and range of motion
  • Help give you a better sense of balance and coordination
