What is LSVT?
LSVT is an intensive speech therapy treatment that focuses on the voice to improve or maintain vocal strength and loudness. More than 20 years of research funded by the National Institute of Health has documented that LSVT improves vocal loudness, speech intelligibility, facial expressions and confidence in conversational speech.
Parkinson’s disease affects an individual’s voice and speech. Its effects may include any or all of the following:
- Monotone voice
- Reduced loudness/volume
- Irregular voice rate
- Impaired speech intelligibility
Evaluation and Treatment Plan
If you or a loved one is experiencing difficulty in communicating due to Parkinson’s disease, contact our LSVT-certified speech and language pathologist for an appointment. At your appointment, our specialist will perform a diagnostic evaluation. Our specialist will then work closely with your neurologist or primary care physician to design a customized treatment plan to meet your individual needs.
Following your comprehensive evaluation, your program will include:
- An intensive month-long (16 sessions) treatment aimed at improving and/or maintaining vocal intensity
- Home program of practice and daily carryover exercises.
- Teaching of maintenance skills
- Resource information on disease specific exercise classes and support groups.
Your therapist will keep you and your physician apprised of the progress and results of your treatment.
