Joint Replacement quality and safety

Our doctors and hospital team have been replacing joints for more than a decade, and this experience results in better patient outcomes. For answers to your questions, speak with your doctor or one of the team's two nurse practitioners.

Your joint replacement team will work with you before, during, and after surgery to help you heal quickly and recover successfully.

It is important to tell your surgeon about any health problems or medical conditions that you may have prior to your surgery. This will help to identify and limit possible complications.

Infection

The Joint Replacement Center team takes several measures to reduce our patients' chances of infection, including:

Our patients receive IV antibiotics before and after surgery.
The surgical area is cleaned with a special sponge and antimicrobial soap before patients come into the hospital. This process is repeated in the operating room just before surgery begins.
Our staff is trained to maintain the highest standards of sterile techniques, helping to keep our patients healthy and our infection rates low.

Rehabilitation

Following surgery, orthopedic patients recuperate in a private room in the Medical/Surgical South wing of the hospital with ready access to the inpatient Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Room located in this wing of the hospital.

Blood Clots

At Mid Coast Hospital we use the following measures to reduce the possibility of blood clots:

  • Blood thinning medications (anticoagulants)
  • Elastic stockings
  • Exercises to increase blood flow in the leg muscles
  • Plastic boots that inflate with air to compress the muscles in your legs improving blood flow.
