Mid Coast Hospital is a certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission and the American Stroke Association. Our team of specially trained physicians and support staff are available around-the-clock, providing the highest level of care to ensure the best possible outcome for your loved one. Our patient-centered program includes telestroke services, acute care, rehabilitation services and ongoing support.

Stroke occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and vital nutrients to the brain is either blocked or breaks. When this happens, part of the brain loses blood and oxygen, destroying millions of valuable nerve cells within minutes. Every stroke is different, but often changes how the brain works and how it controls certain parts of the body.

Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability and the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, killing nearly 133,000 each year. Projections show that by 2030, an additional 3.4 million U.S adults 18 and older will have had a stroke, a 20.5% increase in prevalence from 2012.

  • Face droop
  • Arm weakness
  • Speech Difficulty
  • Time to call for help!

Additional stroke warning symptoms include:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

At the first sign of stroke, dial 9-1-1 immediately

Stroke care begins with the Emergency Services team who will determine if a stroke has occurred. A stroke diagnosis triggers the work of a full provider team including a Neurologist and a Cardiologist that will begin to evaluate the patient. After the initial diagnosis is complete, more testing is needed to evaluate the cause and status of the stroke.

Here are some of common tests that you can expect:

  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
  • CAT scans
  • Echocardiogram
  • Carotid ultrasound
  • Trans Esophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)
  • Blood tests

Mid Coast Hospital is part of the MaineHealth Telestroke Network, which uses state-of-the-art videoconferencing to enhance the care delivered at the bedside. A Telestroke consult uses a two-way audio-video system to connect you, your loved one, and your Emergency Department (ED) care team with the top neurologists at Maine Medical Center.

This program allows community-based physicians timely access to consultations from specialists skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients.

The ALS Clinic is a one-location clinic for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Patients attending the four-hour clinic will be assessed for:

  • Rehabilitation evaluation for mobility and assistive devices
  • Neurological evaluation
  • Speech and swallowing evaluation
  • Breathing evaluation
  • Nutrition evaluation
  • Behavioral health
  • Palliative care
  • Symptom management

While some patients may benefit from a brief series of clinic visits, others may require just one. The clinic is held on the second Friday of every month.
