Mid Coast Hospital firmly believes in cultivating a quality workforce, and one important means of doing so is through the summer junior volunteer program. Seeds are often planted for careers as nurses, physicians, engineers, chefs, X-ray and laboratory technicians, social workers, accountants, pharmacists, dietitians, and countless other occupations.
Volunteering at Mid Coast Hospital also Gives Students...
Being a hospital volunteer can add a whole new dimension to a student’s life. Students who have been through the summer program are welcome to volunteer during the academic year after school hours.
- a chance to be part of a team in a professional atmosphere,
- the opportunity to be part of a very caring culture,
- meet students from other high schools in mid coast Maine,
- learn about making a difference in their communities for the rest of their lives, and
- the opportunity to complete community service hours for high school graduation, and have fun at the same time.
Juniors are ages 13 to 18, and applications should be submitted before April 15 to ensure a slot in the 45-student program. A college student coordinates the program, sometimes studying for a health career and may have been a junior volunteer who already knows “the ropes.”
The program runs for eight weeks—the last week of June through the third week of August. A recognition program for juniors and their families is held at the end of the program.
The return rate for juniors is high, which indicates that the program is very worthwhile and a great use of their summer time. Volunteering at the hospital also makes a great impression with prospective employers, in recommendations for such groups as National Honor Society, and with the Mid Coast Hospital Auxiliary which awards health career scholarships to worthy students. Volunteering at the hospital indicates that students already know what they are getting into, and understand the healthcare culture.
