BeFree Tobacco Prevention & Treatment

BeFree Tobacco

According to the American Cancer Society, smoking causes an estimated 480,000 deaths every year, or about 1 in 5 deaths overall, and more than 16 million Americans live with a smoking-related disease. Quitting smoking is the number one thing tobacco users can do to improve their health.

Quitting tobacco is hard, but there are ways you can increase your chances of success. Free support is just a phone call, click, or app download away.

Locally, Mid Coast Hospital has launched a new tobacco prevention and treatment program, BeFree. The BeFree Tobacco Prevention & Treatment program supports Midcoast community members in their efforts to quit using tobacco by increasing community awareness of the many resources available to assist with quit attempts, and offering free tobacco cessation counseling. Mid Coast Hospital tobacco treatment specialists work with BeFree participants to create a personal quit plan, discuss available medications, and educate them about local, state, and national resources.

In addition to counseling, participants of the BeFree program also receive a quit kit containing a quit journal and free resources to help them quit, such as the Maine Tobacco Helpline, a free phone line (1-800-207-1230) that answers questions and offers support to people thinking about quitting or are ready to quit.

For more information about BeFree, visit www.midcoasthealth.com/be-free. To schedule an appointment with a tobacco treatment specialist, call (207) 373-6585.

Other great resources available that can help you quit include:

  • The American Cancer Society provides resources that can increase your chances of quitting successfully, including tips for friends and families on how to support a person who quits. Call 1-800-227-2345.
  • The American Lung Association's Freedom from Smoking program uses proven activities and tools to help you understand your own relationship with tobacco and how to say quit smoking for good.
  • The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s quitSTART app is a free smartphone app (available for iOS and Android devices) that helps you quit smoking with tailored tips, inspiration, and challenges.
  • The Quit Link has free tools to support Mainers thinking about quitting, including email and text support.
  • The Maine Tobacco Helpline (1-800-207-1230) offers free, confidential support from a tobacco treatment coach that has been shown to double people’s chance of success.
