CAPABLE Program Helps Seniors Live Healthier at Home

CAPABLE Program in Maine

According to the Alliance for Aging Research, September is Healthy Aging Month, an initiative dedicated to educating people on how to live not only longer, but healthier lives. Everyday lifestyle choices can be essential to ensuring people are at their healthiest, and having comfortable, safe housing is a key piece of the puzzle.

Mid Coast–Parkview Health hopes to help local seniors stay safe while living at home through the CAPABLE program, a national initiative that Mid Coast has partnered with Bath Housing on to bring to the Midcoast region.

CAPABLE, which stands for Community Aging in Place Advancing Better Living for Elders, was developed by Johns Hopkins University and works to make homes safer and more accessible for residents through free modifications.

The initiative partners with local homeowners and identifies goals necessary for them to be safer in their homes. After identifying the objectives, the CAPABLE team then makes “adaptability” changes and minor repairs to help the residents utilize their homes in a safer, more efficient way. Staff listens to homeowners’ specific needs and develops a work plan around ease of living.

In order to qualify for CAPABLE, residents must meet a specific set of requirements, but once they do, can receive up to 10 home visits to develop their plan with the CAPABLE team. In addition to a variety of minor home improvements and repairs provided by Bath Housing, CAPABLE recipients can also receive nursing and occupational therapy services from Mid Coast–Parkview Health.

Made possible through grants from the Davis Family Foundation, the John T. Gorman Foundation and the Maine State Housing Authority, CAPABLE illustrates that staying healthy in old age encompasses many factors. Anyone interested in receiving help from the CAPABLE program should contact Bath Housing at (207) 295-3091.
