Exercise for Your Health

Mid Coast Community Health & Wellness Center Opens

Exercise is good for everyone regardless of age, physical ability, or gender. It improves your overall health, and it can even effectively treat and prevent a number of diseases.

Yet despite these facts, physical inactivity is a fast-growing public health problem. Physical inactivity is a known contributor to many chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes, and cancer.

With spring just around the corner, it is a great time to get up and start moving. Here are several health benefits you will enjoy as you start exercising.

Improved Mood and Mental Health

Research shows that 30 minutes of aerobic or combined aerobic-strength training three to five times per week can stimulate brain chemicals that make you feel happier and more relaxed. Exercise also manages stress and depression. It may even help to keep your learning, thinking, and judgment skills sharp.

Added Energy

Regular physical activity improves your mobility and boosts your endurance. It helps your heart work more efficiently and improves the amount of oxygen that gets to your brain and vital organs. It also improves your quality of sleep, which helps increase energy levels.

Better Weight Control

Weight Control

Both diet and exercise play critical roles in controlling weight. Weight gain occurs when your calorie intake exceeds the number of calories you burn. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The longer the activity or greater the intensity, the bigger an impact you will see. As a general rule, try to be more active throughout the day. Take the stairs, park your car further away in the lot, or walk during breaks.

Treatment of Health Conditions and Diseases

Regular exercise helps prevent and manage a wide range of health issues and chronic diseases. In effect: exercise is medicine! It can treat a number of chronic diseases, including (but not limited to) heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, depression, anxiety, back pain, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Parkinson's disease. Follow the recommendations of your healthcare provider. You will notice improvements within 1-2 months of regular exercise. If you need help getting started, Mid Coast Hospital offers Running Start adult exercise programs that provide a safe, supervised program tailored to your medical needs and goals.

Increased Social Engagement and Enjoyment

Use physical activity to connect with friends or family. Avoid exercising alone; ask a friend to join you. You can leverage the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors by taking a hike or a bike ride. Or, if you enjoy watching sports, join a class or team. It comes down to finding an activity that you truly enjoy.

Moderate-intensity aerobic activity like brisk walking, playing tennis doubles, or cycling is generally safe for most individuals. In most cases, the health benefits greatly outweigh the risks. However, you should speak with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise program.

Walk Your Dog

The US Department of Health and Human Services recommends getting 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week. That comes out to just 30 minutes per day, five days a week. You can even break those 30 minutes down into smaller chunks of time and still receive the same health benefits.

Get out and walk your dog, do some yard work, or simply take the stairs instead of riding the elevator; no matter how you exercise, you are improving your health one step at a time.
