Mid Coast Pediatrics Offers In-Office Lead Testing

Benefits of Healthy Eating

As of July 12, Mid Coast Pediatrics now offers in-office lead testing for pediatric patients. Lead, commonly found in older homes, is a toxin that can be harmful to children. Maine law now requires blood lead tests for all children at 1 and 2 years of age. Children of any age at risk for lead poisoning should also be tested.

The most common way a child will contact lead is through paint in a home. While paint that is currently produced and purchased does not contain lead, dust from old paint is the most common way children get lead poisoning. Lead testing is strongly recommended if the child’s home was built before 1950 (or if it was built before 1978 and has been recently repaired), and the child often swallows things that are not food or chews on windowsills.

Additionally, children should be tested for lead if they meet any of the following considerations:

  • The age of the child is 1 or 2, or below the age of 6 and has never been tested
  • Someone who lives with the child may work with lead. (i.e. house painters, contractors, metal recyclers)
  • A sibling or close friend has had lead poisoning
  • The child was born in another country

More information about lead poisoning and testing is available through the Maine Center for Disease Control at https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/environmental-health/eohp/lead/.
