Pain Medication Safety

Medication Safety

Living with pain can be challenging. Some medications, such as prescription opioids, can help with pain but carry potential risks of use including unintentional overdose, death, and addiction. The dangers can occur at any age. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 4 people receiving long-term opioid medication struggles with addiction.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, teens who were prescribed an opioid pain medication by grade 12 were at a 33 percent increased risk of misusing an opioid between ages 19 and 25.

Before you or your child begin any pain medication, it is important to have a conversation with your provider. Be sure to ask the following questions:

  • What are the dangers of the medication?
  • How much and how long should I take this medication?
  • How and when should I take less or stop taking this medication?
  • Should I be worried about taking it with alcohol or other medications?
  • Are there other options, including those that don’t involve prescription drugs?

If you are prescribed a medication, make sure you safely store and secure it at home and dispose of any unused medication properly. Proper disposal sites include at a community medication collection day or in a Big Green Box located at local police departments.
