Understanding the Maternal Opioid Misuse Model

Maternal Opioid Model

The Maternal Opioid Misuse (MOM) Model is a five-year grant that will allow Mid Coast Hospital to develop a collaborative system of care for pregnant women with substance use disorder. With four years left, the focus is on integrating perinatal and postpartum care with comprehensive substance use treatment services for women enrolled in the program.

The program has created a system-wide task force with the goal of implementing a comprehensive approach to care.

The Mid Coast MOM Partners group has embraced the idea of the MOM model, meeting twice a month to discuss ways Mid Coast Hospital can best integrate care across several different departments for MOM clients. Mid Coast Hospital leaders, providers, nurses, and social workers from the Maternity Department, Mid Coast Medical GroupWomen’s Health Care, Mid Coast Pediatrics, and the Addiction Resource Center (ARC) are in attendance.

Members of Mid Coast Center for Community Health & Wellness, including the Community Health Promotion team, are also a part of the meetings and have been invaluable in helping form key connections to other community services doing similar or complementary work in the region.

Additionally, the program:

  • Implements a "No Wrong Door" approach to accessing care for pregnant women needing substance use treatment.
  • Assists participants in treatment for opioid use disorder using Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT).
  • Coordinates prenatal, perinatal, and postpartum care for women with Substance Use Disorder.
  • Creates options for one-stop access to care so patients can receive their MAT at the same time they are receiving prenatal or postpartum care.

The ARC coordinates these services and provides substance use disorder treatment for pregnant and parenting women in coordination with other partners. Virtual group therapy, medication management, and home-based services combined with connections to other community resources provide comprehensive, coordinated treatment for mother-infant dyads through the first year of life.
