Walk with a Doc Program Begins May 1

Walk with a Doc

The Mid Coast Center for Community Health and Wellness has partnered with Mid Coast Medical Group–Topsham Internal Medicine to offer a program called Walk with a Doc.

Walk with a Doc is a physician-led program started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a Saturday morning. He was able to provide education and motivation to over 100 patients during his first walk.

This success inspired him to create an international program designed to enable physicians to educate and motivate patients in a non-traditional way. Since its inception, the program has expanded to over 300 chapters worldwide, including the one offered at Topsham Internal Medicine.

The goal of the program is to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages and to reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle. It aims to get people up and walking.

Walking has been recognized by several Surgeons General as one of the single most important things you can do for your health. 28% of Americans ages six and up—a staggering 80.2 million people—are physically inactive.

Individuals are encouraged to walk at least 30 minutes a day. Walking reduces blood pressure, lowers cholesterol, reduces chances of stroke by up to 50%, reduces pain and disability, and increases one’s sense of wellbeing.

At Mid Coast Medical Group–Topsham Internal Medicine, Kristin Jhamb, MD, and Jennifer Riehl, MD, felt the Walk with a Doc program was a great way to get their patients walking more.

Beginning May 1, join Drs. Jhamb and Riehl on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. at One Wellness Way, Topsham for Walk with a Doc. The outdoor walks follow a lovely path, and individuals of all abilities are welcome to join. Participants are encouraged to set their own paces and distances.

During the walk, chat with the physicians and meet other like-minded people who want to move more and improve their own health.
